Bypassing accusations that they mistreated or heavily pressured workers and customers, Wells Fargo ceded ground on claims that it “falsified bank records, harmed credit ratings of customers, unlawfully misused their personal information, and wrongfully collected millions of dollars in fees and interest,” agreeing to a settlement with the Justice Department and the SEC over civil liabilities.
Responding to the settlement, the CEO of Wells Fargo had this to add:
The conduct at the core of today’s settlements — and the past culture that gave rise to it — are reprehensible and wholly inconsistent with the values on which Wells Fargo was built. Our customers, shareholders and employees deserved more from the leadership of this company.
As so many Americans and Floridians are Wells Fargo customers, we certainly hope so.
