The Inmate CrashPosted on: March 2, 2020
While we know that the justice system can often be upside down and flawed, with a disproportionate number of prisoners convicted and sentenced for seemingly minor offenses, one of the things that reminds us of their humanity is when they experience the same kinds of trials, tragedies, and accidents the rest of us face. For example, back in January, between seven and eight prisoners were being transported from the Oakland County Jail in Michigan to the Will County Adult Detention Center in Illinois when the transport van rear-ended a truck ahead, forcing all passengers to the nearest hospital and one Detroit native to experience a serious bodily injury. Chris Sampson has now filed a lawsuit alleging that the accident could have been avoided, that the driver of the van, representing a for-profit company, had been negligent, that they had not demonstrated care for their passengers, a violation, he said, of his civil rights, regardless of his sentence.
