On February 24, 2019, Dr. Omar Awan lost control of his Tesla on a South Florida parkway, leading to a single car crash when his vehicle hit a palm tree in Broward County. But the collision was severe enough as to warrant help from nearby police and onlookers as the car filled up with smoke and flames when the battery caught fire. Dr. Awan was stuck because the pop out door handles on his Tesla would not open, not from the inside or the outside.
That incident spawned a wrongful death suit that accuses Tesla of creating a vehicle that was, in the end, unsafe and unequipped for an accident that could have otherwise left a man injured, yet still alive. The suit takes aim at Tesla’s own statements that their vehicles are not only innovative, but crashworthy, better, and safer than any car with a standard internal combustion engine, setting an industry standard for safety, in fact.
