One of the lesser known, or at least less considered challenges of social distancing is that anyone dealing with recovery, those who took time each week, sometimes multiple times a week, to attend a group meeting where they could discuss their challenges and be honest, have now lost access to their lifelines, at least for the time being. This past week, NPR spoke with a number of addiction specialists trying to find ways of working with patients in quarantine
, but conceded that the act of being quarantined
has its own consequences for many:
Doing so may increase feelings of depression and anxiety among people in recovery — and those are underlying causes of drug and alcohol use and addiction.
On its own, said one doctor, addiction is a “disease of isolation,” and now those dealing with their addictions may be less inclined to reach out and find the kind of support that can pull them from their isolation.
