While it ranks as one of the best hospitals for children, the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hopsital
in St. Petersburg is under fire of late for a series of lawsuits related to child fatalities. The most recent involved a child born with congenital defects and heart problems that was transferred to JHAC, then released without sufficient disclosure of its poor track record or even the option for a second opinion. Before the child’s death, parents had resisted sending her home, but she was sent home regardless, where she died the next morning.
The Tampa Bay Times was one of the first to recognize this pattern of concerning lawsuits.
Among other incidents documented in the Times’ investigation are cases involving children who had surgical needles left inside their bodies, patches designed to repair holes in children’s hearts failed and many patients suffered infections suspected to be caused by non-sterile hospital conditions.
