Injustice Anywhere

Martin Luther King Jr. / Civil Rights / Employment / Beers and Gordon P.A.Even among those who respected his platform and his voice, Martin Luther King, Jr. dealt with criticism. In particular, members of the clergy accused him of only being a voice, of not actually facing the same challenges, the same threats of violence, the same risk of imprisonment as those he tried to inspire. So it was that he found himself responding to such criticisms from a Birmingham jail, believing that they were still people of “genuine good will.”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial “outside agitator” idea. Anyone who lives in the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere in this country.
