Hip Surgery ComplicationsPosted on: February 21, 2020
Between 1998 and 2014, those who underwent a total hip replacement, or hip arthroplasty, slightly less than 2% of those recovering from surgery experienced acute kidney injuries, or AKI, while they were still admitted to the hospital, according to a recent study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The cause appeared to be an infection stemming from the hip replacement. Those involved in the study took into account health care facilities, outside complications, and length of stay, noting that once patients were home, they were seemingly less likely to develop this AKI infection, which increases the risk of developing a chronic kidney disease. Even the Mayo Clinic associates chronic kidney disease with factors that have impeded or are impeding normal kidney function over months and years.
