Internal documents within the US Consumer Product Safety Commission indicate a shared belief that crib bumpers, which pad the corners of a crib, “can cause asphyxia or suffocation.” But there seemed to be a threshold of fatalities
, within those documents, that would warrant banning them from the marketplace. So to this day, crib bumpers are still available for sale in certain locations. One such statement concluded:
Given the overall infrequency of potentially addressable suffocations involving crib bumpers, a pre- versus post-publication assessment of the effect of these provisions on suffocations may prove extremely difficult, even if the post-publication timeframe were longer.
And yet, between 1990 and 2016, the same organization recorded nearly 300 injuries and more than 100 fatalities connected to the same crib bumpers. Bigger department stores like Wal-Mart and Target have pulled them from shelves, but it is the job of the CPSC to ensure no one sells items that risk the lives of our children and our American families.
