Fans of the Walking Dead may be enjoying the show and the acting, but not everyone has paid attention to the untimely and arguably wrongful death of stuntman John Bernecker, who died on set last July after falling more than 20 feet. On Friday, the US Department of Labor and their Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) issued a statement and a citation of nearly $13,000 for failing to adequately protect their employees from the risk of danger and death.
An administrator from the OSHA said the following:
This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for the entertainment industry. The entire industry needs to commit to safety practices for actors and stunt people involved in this type of work.
Stalwart Films then issued a follow up, reinforcing their commitment to employee safety and disputing the citation. But within 24 hours, an attorney for Bernecker’s mother issued a statement on her behalf, declaring her intent to sue for wrongful death.
