Thirty six days have passed since the last reported Sunrail accident. Two more days and the previous record will be surpassed. But why are we counting the days between train accidents? Because they happen far too often. In 2017, there were eight accidents and six fatalities. In 2016, there were only three accidents, but 2015 had six. Considering that one fatality is too many, Sunrail authorities in Tallahassee, may well be continuing a dialogue about safety, but for the past year, they’ve been visibly focused on expansion.
SunRail’s southern expansion into Osceola County began April 1, 2016 with four new stations now under construction at Meadow Woods in Orange County, and the Tupperware Station, downtown Kissimmee Station and the Poinciana Station in Osceola County. Plans also include double tracking most of the corridor, improving grade crossings and building the four new stations and platforms.
Locals in Central Florida continue to hope that expansion does not equate to more accidents.
