According to a recent study from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, emergency rooms will see a child three years of age or younger every eight minutes. That averages out to more than 60,000 kids in emergency rooms each year.
The study, covering the two decades between 1991 and 2011, showed notable improvements and declining injuries during the 1990s. Experts attribute that decrease to parental awareness about the use of baby walkers. But recent years show a 25% increase in childhood personal injuries most relating to baby carriers, cribs or mattresses, or strollers.
According to a senior author of the study:
“We have achieved great success in preventing baby walker-related injuries by improving the design of the product and instituting better safety standards. We now need to aggressively apply this approach to other nursery products. It is unacceptable that we are still seeing so many injuries to young children from these products.”
