We have recently noted when many clients come to our office to discuss their serious personal injury cases that we have been required to inform them that their own auto insurance coverage is inadequate to compensate them for their own injuries. Oftentimes, many drivers on the roads in Florida have minimal insurance coverage of $10,000. Some clients have failed to purchase uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage to allow them additional recovery for their medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering that often exceed this $10,000 in coverage. We always recommend that you elect uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage when reviewing and renewing your auto policy to protect you and your family in these circumstances. Importantly, we are noting that some insurance agents fail to explain the importance of stacking uninsured motorist coverage. If you have more than one vehicle on the same policy, by electing “stacking”, you can combine the coverage for your vehicles. For example, if you have $50,000 in uninsured/ underinsured coverage with two vehicles and do not stack coverage, you will have $50,000 in such coverage available. However, if you have the same coverage and elect stacking, you will have double the coverage of insurance to $100,000. Importantly, the difference in premium is often minimal to obtain this coverage. We are encouraging everyone to review their coverage and further discuss these issues with your insurance agent or contact an attorney at our office at (407) 862-1825
